Poetas kurdos

Job

mi esperanza no se dobla;
palmo por palmo buscaré el cielo;

cómo las cabezas de maíz amarillean;
cómo maduran las manzanas y las granadas,
cómo los pájaros hacen sus nidos;
cómo los jóvenes aprenden a volar;
cómo las golondrinas migrantes
se sientan en fila en los cables de telégrafo;

Despedida

Cada noche, cuando una almohada
invita a nuestras cabezas,
como los dos polos de la tierra,
a la fiesta de la tristeza,
veo que la despedida yace entre nosotros
Brillante,
como una daga.
Permanezco despierto,

Title

Until a poem is finished
I tease my soul like a cotton carder.
When it's done,
its throne is a full stop
and its title a crown.

*   *   *

Any crane
that once dipped its wing
in the lake of my passion
becomes words for a poem
that I write without end.

*   *   *

I am tired, my friend!
I feel my poem lengthening
into the epic of existence.
I am aware that, in my memory,
words slip out of place.
Let me assign the full stop
and crown it with a title.

The Contract

I propose
one of my nights and a day to be yours alone
I decided
to rein in my wandering mind
to numb the waves
to fill my home with your breath
I will close the doors and windows
seal all the gaps to keep out the wind

My lady
just for once
try this:
dedicate one day and a night to me
break with tradition
upset all the rules
Slip away from what surrounds you:
family and friends
the moon and stars
blue sky and clouds
the burdensome world
Slip away
without a glance at the clock
Set aside your daily rituals -
this old world won't turn upside down
Just once,
for one night and a day,
be that woman!
I'll be yours for one night and a day
And you alone will be mine for one night and a day

Fusion

I see through you
I hear through you
I speak through you
But, I'm afraid
the fame is all mine and yet you are unknown
This is unfair because they think
that you are not me, that you are someone else

Helsinki 9/12/2000

Exile

When exile breaks like a storm
over the open plain of my calm,
when sadness spreads its wings
and hangs, like a crow,
at my door,
I take up the frozen-winged sparrow
of my grief
I go, I go
till I find a child
and with the light of his eyes
I teach the sparrow to fly again
Yet, my love,
how often have I seen
when children grieve in this city
how, like little ducks,
they come to bathe
in the lake of your eyes

Football

The news agencies have announced
a football match.
The teams: the Kremlin and the White House
The ball: the skull of a Kurd
The goal: Kurdistan
The spectators: the world, silent as a grave

Two Sunsets

At dusk
when I gaze at the sunset
I know
one day my own sunset will come
But, sadly,
my twilight won't be as resplendent

A Few Lines About My Age

When Valia asked me,
'When did you first set foot in the world?',
my laugh, like a rhubarb shoot
pokes its head through the snow of my mouth.
My laugh is a sob
that crumples all the smiles in the world.
Yes, Valia!
I was Neanderthal
when I first set foot in this world.
With my own eyes
I witnessed the era of the prophets,
the shameful passage of history
marched down the wrinkles on my forehead.
And yet...
the swindling institutions
of the rotting conscience of the age
have not recorded my name
in the book of the living.

Moscow, 19/10/1974

I Came to the World Before You

I came to the world before you
to prepare my soul
for the celebration of our rendezvous,
to taste life without you
so each moment I saw you
would be a miracle

I came to the world before you
to make flowers live longer
and flames burn brighter
and to disperse the sorrowful clouds,
to learn how easy it is
to come to life in your embrace
and lose you within me

I came to the world before you
to make gazelles
draw near to villages and wells,
to make birds feed from our hands
and elude snares and traps

I came to the world before you
to be able to light stars
like candles
whenever you desire, my love,
to create a place for our rendezvous
from the softest down

I came to the world before you
to train my eyes
to make out your features
amid a flood of colour,
to train my ears
to detect your whisper
amid a storm of voices

I came to the world before you
so that my every fibre
will resonate with the music of your body,
so that I may be worthy
of claiming the crown and the throne
of your love

Unfinished Poem

Only with words
have I drawn a portrait of my love.
I consider it:
it's her, exactly. All that's missing are earrings for her delicate ears.

*

Let dictionaries be proud,
let them enlarge,
let them be adorned with thousands of pretty words.
What can they be worth
when they lack a word
that can be fashioned into her earrings?

*

I am Job
my hope will not bend;
this word obsesses me
and I will reach it sooner or later -
on the wings of the Simmurgh, if I must -
span by span will I search the sky;
if it slips underground,
I'm the one to unearth it.

It is a word and I will find it,
even if the soles of my feet blister and split.
And, if it cannot be found,
I will invent it:
my love will have her earrings, come what may!
