Suniti Namjoshi
(1941). Nació en Bombay, India y trabajó en el Servicio Administrativo Indio así como en puestos académicos en la India antes de mudarse a Montreal. Obtuvo un doctorado de la Universidad McGill, trabajó en la Universidad de Toronto y más tarde en el Centro Para Estudios Sobre la Mujer de la Universidad de Exeter, Reino Unido. En la actualidad vive en el Reino Unido donde trabaja como escritora a tiempo completo.

El Árbol del Pañuelo
Te contaré una historia
sobre el Árbol del Pañuelo,
él cumple lo que promete:
produce pañuelos.
Y de acercársele prudentemente,
y hablarle con respeto,

Hay reglas, por supuesto.
Primero, debes comprender
su origen chino.
Está solo aquí

nada de lágrimas ordinarias,
sino sollozos conmovedores,
y no porque te lo propongas.
Debe suceder por azar.
Pudieras estar caminando por un jardín
en algún lugar;
y si las lágrimas se desbordan
y el árbol las percibe,
te arrojará
un pañuelo.
Debes recogerlo
y enjugar tu rostro.
Y después de esto
las lágrimas cesarán
al menos por seis semanas,
posiblemente más.

The Mouse and the Lion
One day a lion caught a mouse. "Spare me," said the mouse, "I
am so little and you are so big; but, who knows, perhaps some
day I will be able to do you a favour." The lion thought this funny
and let the mouse go. But a few days later the very same lion was
caught in a net. After a while the mouse came along, "Help, called
the lion, Help, little mouse . Chew through these ropes.
Remember, after all, that you owe me a favour." The mouse
started chewing and then suddenly stopped. "Why have you
stopped?" roared the lion. "Well, I just thought of something," said
the little mouse, "You see, I think I have already done you a
favour." "You haven't," roared the lion. "Yes, I have," said the
mouse. "What?" roared the lion. "Well, you see," said the mouse,
"I haven't killed you."
