RESBALADILLA

Comienza a deslizarte y no te detendrás.

SLIDE

Start sliding, and you will not stop. That is the essential point.

Not falling nor gliding, but sliding downward -that is what it is all about. The pleasure mixed with fear that one feels grows rapidly as one slides downward. When a child becomes an adult and puts on skis for the first time, he will likely once again taste the shock of sliding without being able to stop.

Start sliding, and you will not stop -but in reality, the slide lasts only a short two or three seconds. The earth is waiting there to catch anyone who might slide down. Stable boundaries. When the child reaches the lower boundary, he immediately goes round to the ladder at the back of the slide once again. He clambers up so that he might slide down again. Instead of the tragic ending, there is a da capo.

Ultimately, the slide is a solitary game. For the child who enjoys sliding down, other children are not playmates as much as interlopers who get in the way.

A contrary child uses the slide to do what is, quite literally, contrary. On his hands and knees, he crawls up the inclined surface, which other children slide down. For this boy, the slide exists so that he might invert the natural act of sliding by using force to crawl his way to the top.

Sometimes he collides halfway into children who are obeying nature and sliding down from the top, but usually they manage to slip by one another skillfully. As he crawls up, he spreads his legs wide and lets the children obeying the dictates of nature pass right through.

Despite those defiant few who force their way to the top, most small pairs of pants and small skirts faithfully follow the law of gravity and slide down the narrow incline one after another. And then, when they have finally all gone home, it is dusk's turn to slide slowly down its surface with eyes downcast.

ARENERO

SANDBOX

Here, the child is God. He builds mountains, digs out rivers, and hollows out lakes. In his hands, he forms sweet balls of rice or fragile stars of earth.

By absorbing a little liquid, the rustling, semi-fluid sand becomes increasingly plastic, resembling clay in the hands of Jehovah.

The little Homo fabers fill their rectangular cosmos with their own creations. And then comes the moment when they resemble God most strongly –the moment when without a trace of regret they destroy the forms they have labored to create.

COLUMPIOS

SWINGS

Ontogeny mimics phylogeny. Children hanging on the swings reproduce for us our hairy ancestors just as they were, swinging on vines.

For the child who cannot steer the swing even though he awkwardly sticks out his derrière, bends his knees, and jerks his arms back and forth, this toy, made of board and chain, represents the world that will not do as he says. When the swing finally begins to move as the child wishes, however, his face shines with all the pride and joy of a conqueror.

The true wish of the swings is not just to move through a fan-shaped trajectory, but to form a complete circle. Even as that humble platform soiled by shoes dreams of tracing a complete circle in the emptiness, it swings back and forth between its fan-shaped boundaries.

There is one more secret desire that the swing cannot justify but that remains constant: to fly off along a tangent into the depths of the blue vault of heaven, following the lead of centrifugal force.

Still thirsting for flight, the feet push forward, extending farther and farther, but the hands tightly grip the thick chains that connect the periphery of the world to the center.
